Argentina implements October price hikes and fuel tax deferral

Argentina faces a wave of cost increases in October across several sectors. Rental contracts governed by the former Lease Law will see updates of up to 36.41% based on the ICL, while other contracts vary by periodicity. Public transport fares are also rising, with a 4.35% increase for buses in Gran Buenos Aires and a 3.7% increase for both buses and subways in the City of Buenos Aires.

In a move to mitigate inflationary pressure, the national government has issued Decree 1126/2026, postponing pending updates to liquid fuel and carbon dioxide taxes until November 1, 2026. This deferral covers accumulated adjustments from 2024, 2025, and the first two quarters of 2026. Analysts from Grupo de Estudios de Economistas GERES noted that without this postponement, super gasoline would have risen by 11.2% and diesel grade 3 by 4.3%.

Additionally, ANSES is implementing a new automated system to verify the schooling status of beneficiaries of the Universal Child Allowance (AUH). Starting November 1, 2026, the agency will use data from the Secretariat of Education to automatically release the 20% portion of the AUH previously held for educational compliance, eliminating the need for beneficiaries to manually present the National Social Security, Health, and Education Booklet.
