La Pleasure Beach demolition triggers compensation committee and reopening plans

A committee is being established to determine compensation for businesses and individuals affected by the recent demolition of facilities at La Pleasure Beach in Accra. The committee will include representatives from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA), traditional authorities, and local Members of Parliament.

Naa Odoley Sowah, the MP for the area and Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, stated that data has been collected on displaced persons to assess their circumstances. The committee will evaluate whether compensation should be financial or involve relocation.

The demolition, carried out by National Security on October 2, followed a request from the Labadi Beach Hotel to remove structures described as encroachments. Despite the destruction, management of La Pleasure Beach expects the facility to reopen within three weeks, pending debris clearance and the reinstallation of essential facilities like toll booths and toilets. Management has advised vendors against erecting permanent structures once operations resume.
