La Poste may close or transform 471 post offices in France

La Poste is reportedly planning to close or transform approximately 471 post offices across France by the end of 2027. According to reports from Mediapart and information shared with labor unions, these locations may be downgraded to simple municipal agencies or commercial relay points rather than full-service branches.

The Sud-PTT union has expressed significant concern regarding the impact on users, noting that while a full post office can handle roughly 150 different types of operations, smaller agencies and relays may be unable to provide essential services, such as banking. The planned changes are expected to disproportionately affect towns with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, potentially forcing residents to travel much further to access administrative and postal services.

Local officials in regions such as Nord Franche-Comté have reacted strongly to the news. Local leaders argue that reducing these services weakens community life and accelerates the decline of rural territories. While La Poste has not officially confirmed the specific list of closures, regional lists have reportedly been shared with social and economic committees (CSE).
