La Punta, Peru: Italian-influenced coastal district and local cuisine

La Punta, an upmarket coastal district located on a finger of land in the far west of Callao, Peru, maintains a distinct cultural identity shaped by a historic migrant Italian community. While the broader Callao area is often overlooked by travelers in favor of Lima's tourist hubs like Miraflores or Barranco, La Punta offers a unique atmosphere.

The neighborhood's heritage is reflected in local establishments such as the historic restaurant Don Giuseppe. Owned by Juan Hernandez and Lidia Siles, the diner serves distinctly Peruvian home-style dishes, including seafood soups and the iconic ‘pan con pejerrey’. This signature sandwich consists of battered and deep-fried silverside fish served on a fresh bread roll with vinegar-dressed white onions.
