La Quinta community honors fallen Marine Hunter Lopez

Community members in La Quinta and Shadow Hills gathered to honor the memory of Marine Corporal Hunter Lopez and 12 other U.S. service members killed in the Kabul airport bombing five years ago.

At Shadow Hills High School, the fifth annual Hunter Lopez Memorial Run took place, featuring a two-mile event where participants carried the ‘Honor and Remember Flag’. The event serves as a way for students and the community to learn about military and first responder sacrifices.

In La Quinta, hundreds attended the Hunter Lopez Lightsaber Vigil at the Civic Center Campus. The tribute, which utilized lightsabers to honor the late Marine—a lifelong Star Wars fan—was led by local officials. The Lopez family also continues their work through the Hunter Lopez Memorial Foundation, which provides scholarships and support for those serving the country.
