La Rábida inaugurates Tau Cross monument to honor Franciscan history

The Huelva Provincial Council has inaugurated a new Tau Cross sculpture in the Plaza de los Frailes in La Rábida. The monument, standing four meters tall, is the work of artist José Manuel Díaz Benítez, also known as ‘Chiqui Díaz’.

The installation commemorates the 800th anniversary of the passing of Saint Francis of Assisi and serves as a symbol of the Franciscan order's historical influence in the region. Officials noted that the presence of the Franciscans in La Rábida predates the arrival of Christopher Columbus and played a crucial role in supporting his maritime projects.

During the ceremony, David Toscano, president of the Huelva Provincial Council, described the sculpture as a gesture of gratitude toward the Franciscan community, who continue to guard and maintain the monastery and the enclave. The local mayor, Milagros Romero, stated that the event enriches the cultural and touristic heritage of Palos de la Frontera.
