La Rinconada miners parade at 5,000 m for Peru's Independence Day

Hundreds of miners from more than 25 mining companies gathered in La Rinconada, a high‑altitude mining town in the Ananea district of San Antonio de Putina, Puno, Peru. The civic parade was held at an elevation above 5,000 metres to mark the national Independence Day celebrations. Participants temporarily left their shifts, marched along an unpaved road, raised the Peruvian flag and the national pavilion, and expressed pride in a ceremony described as a symbol of unity and patriotism.

The event highlighted the extreme climatic and geographic conditions faced by workers in one of the world’s highest permanent settlements. A coordinator of a mining shaft was quoted saying, “En este aniversario patrio, estamos presentes para saludar a nuestra patria,” underscoring the miners’ commitment to national traditions despite the harsh environment.
