La Rioja heritage features Romanesque sites and wine traditions

The La Rioja region in Spain features significant historical and cultural landmarks centered around its viticulture and Romanesque heritage. In San Asensio, the town celebrates the ‘Batalla del Clarete’ in July, a festival where approximately 30,000 liters of wine are used in a communal celebration, marking the area as the birthplace of clarete.

The landscape is defined by historical fortifications such as the Castillo de Davalillo, a 12th-century structure built to defend the border against the Kingdom of Navarre. Additionally, the region hosts Santa María de la Piscina in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a well-preserved 12th-century Romanesque hermitage. Founded by Ramiro Sánchez of Navarre, the site includes a medieval necropolis and ancient rock-cut wine presses, highlighting the area's long-standing connection to wine production.
