Argentine provinces launch debt relief programs to combat rising delinquency
Various Argentine provinces are implementing financial relief measures to combat rising household debt and delinquency. In Chubut, the government expanded its Financial Relief Program to include credit card debts from Banco del Chubut, offering a one-year grace period, a 25% fixed rate for 24 months, and terms up to 72 installments.
Other regional responses include Neuquén, which offers refinancing up to $50 million; Tierra del Fuego, providing terms up to 10 years for certain debtors; and Santa Fe, which launched a plan to ensure new debt installments do not exceed 25% of income. In La Rioja, Banco Rioja reduced interest rates by 20 percentage points, while the provincial government also launched operations against illegal lenders.
At the national level, Vladimir Werning, Vice President of the Central Bank (BCRA), noted that while delinquency rates have stabilized around 7.7%, high interest rates remain a significant burden for families. He suggested that banks should absorb losses by offering lower rates and longer terms to create a sustainable repayment cycle.
