Argentina: Unions protest debt while La Rioja reissues Chachos quasi-currency

Labor unions and social organizations, including the CGT and CTA, marched to Argentina's Ministry of Economy to demand a debt refinancing program. The protesters highlighted a record level of delinquency among families and SMEs, arguing that high interest rates and falling incomes are stifling consumption and production. They requested that the Central Bank regulate interest rates for bank loans and digital wallets to prevent predatory lending.

Simultaneously, business chambers reported significant economic distress, noting that over 30,600 companies have closed since December 2023, leading to the loss of 411,000 registered jobs. They are calling for an SME Emergency Law to address rising energy costs and high interest rates.

In La Rioja, Governor Ricardo Quintela has reissued the Chachos quasi-currency to inject 4 billion pesos monthly into the local economy, aiming to support 80,000 state workers. This move has drawn sharp criticism from President Javier Milei, who labeled it a populist 'Plan Platita 2.0' based on money emission. Additionally, the La Rioja government has signaled a potential default on its Green Bond, blaming the national government for withholding approximately USD 1.2 billion in funds.
