La Rochelle loggerhead turtles track thousands of kilometers via Argos tags

Thirty-three loggerhead turtles, rehabilitated by the Aquarium de La Rochelle, were released into the ocean on July 3, 2026. These animals were rescued from the English Channel and Atlantic coasts between September 2025 and May 2026.

Ten of the turtles were equipped with Argos tracking devices, including two featuring depth sensors to record diving patterns. This technology allows scientists to monitor their movements in near real-time to study the influence of water temperature, currents, and food sources on their trajectories. Some turtles have already traveled over 2,000 kilometers, with some moving north toward British and Irish waters, while others remained in the Bay of Biscay.
