La Romana environmental authorities seize 400 bags of charcoal

The Provincial Directorate of Environment in La Romana has seized more than 400 bags of charcoal following reports of indiscriminate tree felling in the El Gato–La Noria project area. The action was prompted by complaints from local landowners regarding illegal logging suspected of being used for charcoal production.

Mónica Lorenzo, the provincial director of Environment, conducted a site visit to investigate the claims. In response, she instructed surveillance personnel and the National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA) to increase monitoring and preventive measures in the affected areas, which include Cumayasa, Villa Hermosa, El Gato, and La Noria.

National union leader Mario Díaz also joined the call for stronger measures to preserve natural resources. Authorities have committed to ongoing surveillance in the intervention zones and have urged citizens to report any illegal logging or burning activities.
