La Romana Port to undergo remodeling for security and tourism
The Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM) has announced the start of remodeling and adaptation works at the Port of La Romana, scheduled to begin in October. The project follows the completion of legal procedures and certifications from the Comptroller General of the Republic.
Alejandro Campos, Executive Director of APORDOM, stated that the intervention aims to strengthen national security and enhance cooperation with the Armed Forces in the eastern region. Beyond commercial operations, the project is intended to secure a vital strategic node for the country.
The expansion is tied to significant economic and tourism growth in the area. Key developments include the expansion of the cruise terminal by Central Romana to accommodate Oasis-class vessels, which are among the largest in the world, and strategic agreements with the international line MSC for new investments in Isla Catalina.
Local authorities and maritime officials, including representatives from the Navy and the Coast Guard (CESEP), emphasized that the works will ensure compliance with international codes for the protection of ships and port facilities while boosting local commerce and regional stability.
