La Réunion port authorities sign charter to combat narcotrafficking

Authorities in La Réunion have signed a formal charter to combat rising narcotrafficking through the Grand Port maritime. The agreement, signed on August 28, 2026, aims to prevent the port from becoming a major entry point for illegal drugs by involving all economic actors in the maritime sector.

The initiative focuses on increasing vigilance against corruption, external pressure, and money laundering. To support this, the charter includes training programs for professionals, such as drivers, to help them recognize and report suspicious behavior to management, police, or customs services. Julien Dujardin, Director General of the Grand Port, noted that the high volume of goods and vehicles creates vulnerabilities that criminal organizations seek to exploit.

This mobilization follows a significant increase in drug seizures on the island. Recent data shows a rise in maritime freight smuggling, including the interception of over a tonne of cocaine at sea in July and various seizures of cannabis and MDMA. Prefect Patrice Latron emphasized that the fight against drugs requires solidarity between law enforcement and port professionals to be successful.
