France student protests escalate over education shortages

France is experiencing widespread student and teacher protests over chronic teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, and deteriorating school infrastructure. The movement, which began in late September, has escalated into a national mobilization involving thousands of participants across major cities including Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Nantes.

As of early October, approximately 141 secondary schools remain closed, representing less than 4% of the country's 3,700 high schools. The Ministry of Education has responded by announcing the deployment of 3,000 substitute teachers to the most affected areas. However, student unions and organizations have labeled these measures insufficient, calling for a massive general strike on Tuesday, October 13.

The unrest has been marked by significant tension and violence. The Ministry of Justice reports that nearly 7,000 people, 86% of whom are minors, have been taken into police custody since the protests began. There have been reports of serious injuries, including a 15-year-old in Lens who lost a hand due to a police flashbang grenade. The United Nations has expressed concern regarding the incidents and has called for the respect of peaceful assembly and the proportionate use of force by authorities.

Financial impacts are also being assessed, with the government estimating at least 30 million euros in damages resulting from school blockades and unrest.
