La Réunion submarine cable project announced to connect with South Africa
A consortium including Orange, Telco OI, Réunicable, and La Réunion Connectée has announced the ReuNION project, a new submarine cable system designed to enhance digital connectivity for La Réunion.
The project, which has a total cost of 88.3 million euros, is supported by 30 million euros from the European Union's European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The infrastructure is expected to be commissioned in 2028.
In its initial phase, the cable will provide a direct route between La Réunion and South Africa. A subsequent phase aims to extend the network to Singapore and other locations within the Indian Ocean. The technical specifications include 16 fiber pairs, each capable of 20 Tbps, providing a total theoretical capacity of 320 Tbps. This upgrade is intended to improve latency, increase bandwidth, and provide redundancy as existing regional cables, such as the SAFE cable, approach the end of their operational lifespan.
