La Serena hosts free play on asbestos consequences in Chile

The Municipal Theater in La Serena will host a free performance of the play “Lumbre, suprema protesta” on Thursday, October 29. The production focuses on the self-immolation of Eduardo Miño in 2001 in front of La Moneda, a protest against the lethal health effects of asbestos and the perceived immunity of responsible corporations.

Before 2001, asbestos was a common construction material due to its low cost and fire resistance. However, its use led to widespread chronic pulmonary diseases, including asbestosis and pleural mesothelioma. The play aims to connect with social justice principles and collective memory regarding how this material impacted thousands of lives.
