LA Shorts festival offers path to Academy Award eligibility

The LA Shorts festival provides a pathway for filmmakers to qualify for the Academy Awards. Under the current regulations of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, festival awards granted between October 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026, may contribute to eligibility.

Of the fourteen awards presented by the festival, the Academy recognizes four. Specific categories such as 'Best International' at the festival fall under the Academy's short film competitions rather than the International Feature Film category, which is reserved for long-form productions. To qualify, winners must upload their work to the Academy portal along with documentation proving the recognition, and the Academy must verify the film's duration, rights, and credits.
