La Spezia hosts art installation to combat marine pollution
Artist Fabrizio Bellomo has unveiled ‘Vagabondi del mare’ (Sea Vagabonds), a public art installation in La Spezia designed to raise awareness about marine pollution. The project, part of the Aktè – Laboratorio del mare initiative, features enlarged photographic images of hydrodiffers—scientific devices used by researchers from CNR-ISMAR, CNR-IFC, and INGV to track plastic movement in the oceans.
By bringing these scientific tools into the public urban space, the installation aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and environmental consciousness. The project involved researchers such as Silvia Merlino and Marina Locritani, as well as students participating in citizen science programs. Supported by the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, the initiative highlights the ongoing impact of waste dispersion in the sea and the importance of marine health.
