La Tirana Festival Draws Up to 500,000 Pilgrims for Virgin of Carmen Celebrations in Chile

Between July 10 and July 20, the town of La Tirana in the Pozo Almonte commune will host the annual Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen, one of Chile’s largest northern religious gatherings. Organizers expect between 250,000 and 500,000 pilgrims and visitors from across Chile as well as from Peru and Bolivia.

The ten‑day program features the traditional Entrada Solemne de la Cruz del Calvario, a central day of worship on July 16, and a series of liturgical events, processions, and 208 religious dances that will honor the centennial of the Virgen del Carmen’s coronation. A specially crafted crown will be presented to the image of the patron saint, incorporating materials that reflect pampino cultural identity. Security forces, a children’s mass, and a “Jornada de los Mundos Andinos” are also part of the schedule. Attendance guidelines advise light daytime clothing, warm night wear, and compliance with the local dry‑law prohibiting alcohol sales from July 1 to July 21.
