La Tirana’s Virgin of Carmen Festival Opens in Chile

The annual Virgin of Carmen celebration in La Tirana, Chile, officially began at 22:00 on Thursday with a mass opening ceremony. Around 208 religious dance groups are slated to perform throughout the town, showcasing traditional costumes, music, and choreography in honor of “the Chinita.”

This year’s festivities coincide with the centennial of the Virgin’s coronation as Chile’s patroness, and a specially crafted crown will be presented to the image during the main Mass on July 16. Vilas Radio is broadcasting the opening live, providing continuous coverage of the 24‑hour events.

The opening was led by the Asociación Norte San José de Arica, and the celebration is expected to draw thousands of pilgrims from across northern Chile and neighboring regions.
