La Traviata receives fresh stagings in Austria and Verona

Director Damiano Michieletto discussed his new production of Verdi’s La Traviata, set in the Roaring Twenties and featuring a broken‑mirror stage design that reflects the heroine Violetta’s societal victimisation. He explained that the staging moves the story from 19th‑century Paris to a post‑1920 party world, using the music to suggest a hopeful rebirth even as Violetta’s tragedy unfolds.

In a separate documentary, presenters Annette Frier and Michael Kessler followed director Paul Curran’s arena version of La Traviata in Verona’s ancient open‑air arena. The production evokes the Parisian Moulin Rouge and Belle Époque aesthetics, and the film shows how the team overcame a severe storm that threatened the premiere, highlighting the technical and artistic effort required to bring opera to a massive outdoor setting.
