La Trobe University develops AI robot to train teachers

Researchers at La Trobe University have developed Fletch, an AI-driven social robot designed to help teachers practice managing difficult and emotionally charged conversations. The robot acts as an embodied AI agent, using social cues and physical presence to mimic various personas, such as a disgruntled parent questioning a child's grades or disputing a suspension.

By using AI to modify its reactions based on a teacher's responses, Fletch provides a safe environment for pre-service and early-career educators to rehearse de-escalation strategies. Lead researcher Professor Therese Keane noted that verbal aggression in schools has become a significant occupational health and safety issue, contributing to teacher stress, burnout, and shortages. The program will initially roll out in several Melbourne schools to train both student and existing staff.
