La Unión opposes tax cuts for Almaraz nuclear plant owners

The agricultural organization La Unión has called on the regional president of Extremadura, María Guardiola, to reconsider the decision to progressively eliminate the 'ecotasa' tax paid by owners of the Almaraz nuclear power plant. The organization estimates that the three-year phase-out of this tax will result in a loss of approximately 147 million euros for the regional treasury between 2027 and 2029.

La Unión highlighted the significant profits of the plant's owners, noting that Iberdrola (53% stake), Endesa (36%), and Naturgy (11%) reported combined profits of over 10.6 billion euros in 2025. The organization contrasted Extremadura's policy with that of Catalonia, where the regional parliament approved a law to allocate 30% of nuclear taxes to the agricultural and livestock sectors, amounting to 45 million euros in 2025.

Furthermore, La Unión pointed out that Iberdrola and Endesa, who control 89% of Almaraz, also manage the Ascó and Vandellòs nuclear plants in Catalonia. The group criticized the regional government for claiming a lack of funds for agricultural aid while simultaneously waiving significant tax revenue from energy corporations.
