La Vega juvenile detention center faces human rights allegations

Representatives of the Public Defender's Office have reported “alarming conditions” at the Máximo Antonio Álvarez Center, a juvenile detention facility in La Vega, Dominican Republic. The center currently holds at least 38 adolescents.

The facility, which dates back to 1942, reportedly suffers from structural issues including leaks, destroyed bathrooms, and sewage problems. Additionally, officials noted a lack of essential medicines and limited educational opportunities for the detainees.

Elizabeth Rodríguez, coordinator of the Public Defense of La Vega and member of the Prisons Commission, stated that the facility violates fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. She noted that the Public Defender's Office has been calling for the permanent closure of the center in annual reports since 2007, arguing that the current environment prevents the social reintegration of minors.
