La virgen de la tosquera selected as Argentina's Oscar entry

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Argentina has selected the film ‘La virgen de la tosquera’ to represent the country in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards. Directed by Laura Casabé and written by Benjamín Naishtat, the film is based on short stories by author Mariana Enríquez.

Set during the 2001 economic crisis in the Buenos Aires suburbs, the supernatural horror film follows a young woman named Natalia who uses magic to navigate a complex romantic triangle. The production, starring Dolores Oliverio, was chosen through a two-stage voting process involving over 700 Academy members. It emerged as the winner over other finalists, including ‘El Partido’ by Juan Cabral and Santiago Franco, ‘Nuestra Tierra’ by Lucrecia Martel, and ‘Parque Lezama’ by Juan José Campanella.

In addition to the Oscars, the film has been selected to represent Argentina at the 41st Goya Awards as the Best Ibero-American Film. The official Oscar selection process continues with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood, which will announce a preliminary list of 15 finalists on December 15.
