LA28 Olympic Games face scrutiny over cultural planning and funding

Preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games are facing scrutiny regarding the Cultural Olympiad. During a legislative hearing at the California Science Center, lawmakers and critics raised concerns about the lack of a formal, cohesive plan and clear funding mechanisms to support the arts and culture program accompanying the Games.

Former Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky noted that the delay in mobilizing cultural planning could impact the ability to secure major artists who book engagements years in advance. While local cities and nonprofits have begun developing their own frameworks, critics argue that a centralized direction is missing.

In a separate development related to the Olympic movement, Arizona State University has launched its Center for Olympic Studies. The interdisciplinary center aims to explore the industries supporting global sporting events, including marketing, sustainability, and journalism, while providing a platform for research and student engagement related to the Olympic and Paralympic movement.
