Labinština leaders oppose hazardous waste disposal in Koromčno
Local leaders from the Labinština region, including Istrian County Prefect Boris Miletić and Labin Mayor Donald Blašković, have formally requested that hazardous waste from Gospić not be processed at the Holcim cement plant in Koromčno.
The request follows a Croatian government decision to use the Koromčno facility for the emergency disposal of waste from an illegal landfill in Gospić. Holcim representatives stated that the government's decision constitutes a mandatory obligation and argued that the plant can resolve the issue in an environmentally acceptable manner. To address public concern, Holcim pledged to provide full documentation, including laboratory analysis results, independent shipment inspections, and publicly accessible emission data. The company noted that the waste would be transported in closed trucks and processed in a closed system at 1,450 degrees Celsius.
Political group Možemo! has criticized the government's decision, alleging that the move was rushed due to public pressure and lacks transparency. The group cited an independent analysis by Professor Renat Šarc, which suggested that samples from the Gospić site contained levels of cobalt, antimony, and chlorine that significantly exceed established limits. Možemo! also expressed support for local demands to relocate CO2 storage facilities away from populated areas.
