Labor Day 2026: Expected closures for banks, post offices, and stock markets
Labor Day 2026 will be observed on Monday, Sept. 7, resulting in various closures across federal, financial, and postal services in the United States.
Federal, state, and most local government offices, including public schools, libraries, and federal courts, will be closed. While physical court offices will shut, electronic filing systems are expected to remain available in many jurisdictions.
Financial markets and banking services will see significant disruptions. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and U.S. bond markets are scheduled to close. The Federal Reserve will also be closed, which may delay direct deposits, wire transfers, and check processing until Tuesday, Sept. 8. Most major commercial bank branches are expected to close for in-person service, though ATMs and online banking will remain accessible.
Postal and delivery services will also be affected. All U.S. Postal Service locations will close, with regular mail delivery resuming on Tuesday. UPS and FedEx will suspend most regular pickup and delivery services, though specialized critical services may remain operational.
In the retail sector, many large stores will remain open with potentially adjusted hours. However, Costco warehouses are expected to be closed, as the company observes Labor Day as one of its seven annual warehouse closures.
