Labor Day identified as most dangerous US holiday for driving
A study by Whitley Law Firm has identified Labor Day weekend as the most dangerous period for motorists in the United States. The report, which analyzed 20 holidays, assigned Labor Day a holiday danger score of 111, compared to a baseline of 100 for normal days. During this period, the average number of people killed per day in car accidents rises to 141.1.
Other high-risk holidays include the 4th of July and Memorial Day. Memorial Day is specifically noted for high rates of impaired driving, with drunk driving accounting for 39% of all fatal accidents during that weekend, alongside a high share of speeding-related crashes.
Geographically, the U.S. South experiences the highest levels of dangerous holiday driving, with Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana identified as high-risk regions. Mississippi is noted as the deadliest state per resident for several holidays, including Labor Day, Cinco de Mayo, New Year’s Day, and Halloween.
