Labor Day weekend travel: Traffic and parking restrictions announced

Various regional authorities in the United States are implementing traffic and parking restrictions to manage increased activity during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

In Virginia, the Department of Transportation (VDOT) will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures from noon on Friday, Sept. 4, through noon on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Motorists traveling to the Eastern Shore, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, or Hampton Roads are advised to allow extra travel time. VDOT suggests using Interstate 664 and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as alternatives to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel due to ongoing construction.

In Volusia County, the Sheriff's Office is restricting some on-beach parking from Saturday, Sept. 5, through Monday, Sept. 7. The restrictions affect less than 3% of the 5,000 available beach parking spaces, specifically in areas with high pedestrian movement such as Grace K. Barck North Beach Community Park and Esther Street Beachfront Park. Total closures will also apply to 125 spots in front of Sun Splash Park, Frank Rendon Park, and Flagler Avenue Park to improve visibility and reduce vehicle-pedestrian conflicts.
