Labor disputes and utility issues reported in Mayotte and Réunion

In Mayotte, labor tensions are rising as trade unions threaten an unlimited strike starting Monday, October 26, citing unfulfilled commitments and deteriorating working conditions. Additionally, maritime professionals are considering industrial action due to concerns regarding port management, mooring security, and the absence of pontoons.

Economic challenges persist in Mayotte, where the average salary remains 13% lower than in mainland France, with half of all employees earning a maximum of 1,700 euros net per month. On the infrastructure front, the wastewater treatment plant serving Sada, Ouangani, and Chiconi remains non-functional due to a lack of network connections.

In Réunion, a strike at Cise Réunion continues following a failure to reach an agreement between management and workers. Unions are seeking a 20% wage increase, a demand management claims is incompatible with the company’s economic capacity. A conciliation commission is scheduled for Wednesday in Saint-Denis.

The strike coincides with fragile water distribution services across several sectors of Réunion. Issues include electrical difficulties in Sainte-Rose affecting water disinfection, the shutdown of the Mare à Vieille Place treatment plant in Salazie, and chlorination defects in the Casud and Avirons areas. Malicious acts against network equipment have also been reported, further destabilizing the supply.
