Labor groups oppose extended workdays and demand worker rights
Labor organizations are protesting proposed changes to working hours and demanding better protections for workers. The General Association of Municipal Public Employees (AGEPYM) has rejected a proposal to extend the workday from 8 to 11 hours. AGEPYM president Roswal Solórzano criticized the Ministry of Labor, stating that the technical studies used to justify the change by the Superior Labor Council (CST) have not been made public. Solórzano argued that the proposal does not actually provide flexibility, as the total weekly hours would remain at 44.
Simultaneously, the Association of Domestic Workers is advocating for the dignification of their sector. While they support the government's initiative to change the term ‘domestic employee’ to ‘household worker,’ they emphasize that true progress requires guaranteed labor and human rights. Their primary demands include access to social security and maternity protections, the enforcement of written contracts, and a minimum wage that covers the basic food basket. They also called for the effective implementation of ILO Convention 189.
