Germany and Amsterdam implement new regulatory and tax changes
Germany is implementing several regulatory changes starting in September 2026. Deutsche Bahn will introduce an alcohol ban at select stations, including Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin Gesundbrunnen, Kiel, and Braunschweig, with plans to expand the ban to all 5,400 stations by October. The company cites increased security and reduced litter as primary motivations.
Additionally, new EU regulations will tighten rules on environmental advertising, prohibiting vague claims such as ‘climate neutral’ or ‘green’ without sufficient evidence. In the fiscal sector, a reform of the tax advisory law is set to provide landlords with easier access to more affordable tax consulting services.
In the Netherlands, Amsterdam is moving to combat overtourism by significantly increasing its bed tax. The city plans to raise the tax to 20 percent by 2031, which, combined with national VAT increases, could result in total accommodation taxes reaching up to 41 percent.
