Eurozone inflation rises, pressuring ECB amid German industrial decline

Inflation is accelerating across the Eurozone, driven largely by rising energy costs linked to Middle East tensions. In Germany, inflation rose to 3.3% in September, exceeding economist expectations. Similar upward trends were reported in France (3.4%), Italy (4.1%), and Spain (5.0%). This surge increases pressure on the European Central Bank (ECB) to consider further interest rate hikes to return prices to their 2% target.

Germany is also facing significant economic challenges. Its industrial competitiveness has dropped sharply, with a score of 3 according to a recent study, as companies struggle with bureaucracy and high energy costs. While German unemployment saw a marginal decrease to 6.4% in September, structural pressures and a weakening industrial sector remain concerns.

In Greece, the labor market shows signs of improvement. ELSTAT reported that the unemployment rate fell to 7.4% in August 2026, a significant decrease from 8.8% in August 2025. This represents an 18-year low for the country. Meanwhile, new ECB rules regarding liquidity and collateral are expected to make liquidity procurement more expensive for Greek banks starting in late November.
