Labor market trends show high demand in construction and service sectors

Labor market trends in France and Spain indicate significant recruitment challenges, particularly within the construction and service sectors. In France, France Travail reports that approximately 140,000 recruitments are anticipated in the construction industry for 2026, yet 65% of these projects are considered difficult to fill by employers. Key roles in demand include masons, carpenters, electricians, and site managers.

Despite the high demand, the construction sector struggles to attract younger generations who often prioritize university education. However, the economic reality of the trade is notable; a retired mason noted that construction workers can earn more than those in office roles or positions requiring higher education. In France, the average net monthly salary in construction reached 2,411 euros in 2024, according to Insee.

Broadly across France, employers have expressed 2.3 million hiring intentions for 2026, representing a 6.5% decrease from 2025. While overall recruitment difficulties are declining in most sectors—such as finance and insurance—the hospitality and healthcare sectors remain high on the list of most active recruitment areas. Agriculture also shows high demand due to seasonal pressures, specifically for viticulturists and arboriculturists.
