Moldova automotive market sees record imports and rapid growth

The automotive market in Moldova is experiencing significant growth, with vehicle imports reaching record levels. Analysts predict the country's total vehicle fleet could surpass one million units by 2027, up from approximately 926,400 at the end of the third quarter of 2026. This surge is driven largely by imports, which are expected to exceed 67,000 units this year, following a high of 64,000 in 2025.

A notable shift in purchasing behavior has emerged: for the first time in 2025, more than half of all imported vehicles were purchased by companies rather than individuals. This trend is supported by the availability of leasing options through corporate importers. Additionally, there is a growing preference for Chinese automobiles over those from the European Union.

While the market value of imports is projected to reach 1.2 billion dollars this year, experts warn that the rapid increase in vehicles is placing significant pressure on national infrastructure. Existing road networks, many designed during the Soviet era, struggle to accommodate the rising traffic, leading to increased congestion in cities like Chișinău.
