IETAM implements affirmative actions and faces scrutiny in Tamaulipas

The Electoral Institute of Tamaulipas (IETAM) has announced that 20 percent of its 65 municipal and district councils will be reserved for vulnerable groups. Under new affirmative action measures, one seat in each council will be designated for youth, seniors, persons with disabilities, or the LGBTQ+ community to increase participation in the 2027 electoral organization.

Simultaneously, the National Action Party (PAN) has announced it will review IETAM's contracts and suppliers for the 2027 elections. This move follows concerns regarding resource management and transparency at the National Electoral Institute (INE). The PAN intends to request detailed information on contracting conditions and the reasoning behind the appointment of new councilors to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

In the broader political landscape of Tamaulipas, discussions regarding gender parity in municipal candidacies are ongoing. While political parties are organizing for future cycles, observers note that the distribution of competitive municipal posts between men and women remains a point of contention regarding compliance with parity regulations.
