Argentina implements new minimum wage scheme amid rising labor strikes

The Argentine government has implemented a new unilateral scheme for the minimum wage (SMVyM) following failed negotiations with unions. Under Resolution 4/2026, the minimum wage will rise to $383,800 in September 2026, with monthly staggered increases projected to reach $437,000 by April 2027.

Simultaneously, labor tensions are escalating across several sectors. University faculty and staff, represented by unions such as CONADU and Fedun, have rejected government salary proposals, citing a 31.2% loss in purchasing power and non-compliance with the University Financing Law. This has led to a 24-hour national strike.

In the transport and aviation sectors, the ATE union has announced a 48-hour strike at 27 airports for September 3 and 4, demanding sectoral bargaining and funding for operational tasks like airport firefighting. Additionally, the AOITA union has declared an alert for interurban transport in Córdoba due to stalled wage negotiations.
