Indonesia protests erupt over economy, corruption, and wildfires
Mass demonstrations took place across several Indonesian cities, including Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bandung, on October 28 and 29, 2026. Protesters, including students from Universitas Trisakti and BEM UI, voiced grievances regarding economic hardship, corruption, and the government's handling of massive wildfires. The SADAR protest committee specifically demanded a national emergency declaration to increase firefighting resources, noting that over 1.9 million hectares had burned through September.
In Jakarta, security forces deployed thousands of personnel to manage traffic and maintain order near strategic locations such as Monas, the DPR RI building, and Bundaran HI. While many protests remained peaceful, clashes were reported in Yogyakarta, where unidentified groups reportedly threw stones and fireworks at police near the DPRD DIY building. In Jakarta, tensions rose briefly when a man was surrounded by protesters under suspicion of being an intelligence officer.
In Yogyakarta, the Aliansi Jogja Memanggil group presented 12 demands, including calls for higher minimum wages and better protection for civil rights. Meanwhile, in Bandung, students gathered at the West Java DPRD building to demand that the Prabowo-Gibran administration fulfill promises regarding legal supremacy and social welfare.
