Argentina moves Commerce Employee Day to Monday, September 28

In Argentina, the Commerce Employee Day, officially observed on September 26, will be moved to Monday, September 28, 2026, due to the original date falling on a Saturday. This decision was reached through an agreement between the Federación Argentina de Empleados de Comercio y Servicios (FAECyS) and various business chambers.

The holiday carries the same legal weight as a national holiday for workers under Collective Bargaining Agreement 130/75. Consequently, employees who work on Monday are entitled to double pay (a 100% surcharge), while those who take the day off will receive their regular monthly salary without deductions.

While many large retail chains, supermarkets, and shopping centers are expected to close, smaller neighborhood businesses owned by their proprietors may remain open. The shift aims to allow workers to enjoy a long weekend and better work-life balance. The day commemorates the 1934 enactment of Law 11.729, a landmark piece of legislation that established fundamental labor rights in Argentina, including severance pay and paid vacations.
