Laboratory diagnostics and physiological adaptation in athletes

Interpreting laboratory results requires distinguishing between standard health norms and physiological adaptations caused by regular physical exertion. For endurance athletes, such as runners, training intensity, recovery, and hydration can significantly influence blood parameters and enzyme activity. A result within a standard reference range does not always guarantee optimal health, nor does a result outside that range necessarily indicate disease. For instance, long-distance runners may experience iron deficiencies even when hemoglobin levels appear normal.

Comprehensive laboratory diagnostics involve analyzing various biological materials, including blood and urine, to provide a complete health overview. Modern diagnostic processes utilize integrated laboratory information systems and advanced analyzers from manufacturers like Beckman Coulter, Bio-Ksel, and Sysmex to minimize errors and accelerate results. Quality control is maintained through internal monitoring and participation in international programs such as Sysmex IQAS. Beyond basic blood work, broad diagnostics can include allergy testing and diabetes screening.
