New Zealand election campaigns launch with tax and debt disputes

The New Zealand general election campaign has intensified as the major parties, National and Labour, officially launched their platforms in Auckland. The race is described as one of the closest in decades, with polling showing the two main blocs in a tight contest.

National's campaign is centered on a “No New Taxes” slogan. The party has unveiled an 11-page economic plan that pledges to return the country to a budget surplus by 2028/29 and reduce core Crown spending to below 30 percent of GDP. Their platform includes compulsory KiwiSaver, extended paid parental leave, and infrastructure development.

Labour has focused its pitch on the cost of living and student debt. Leader Chris Hipkins has pledged to cut 10 percent from student debt and wipe the loans of those owing $2,000 or less. Labour also faces scrutiny over its proposed capital gains tax, which National has used to allege that the left would introduce multiple new taxes.

Other political voices, including the Green Party and New Zealand First, are also active. The Greens are campaigning on rent controls and free tertiary education, while New Zealand First has introduced policies targeting the Waitangi Tribunal. Public concerns remain concentrated on the economy, social issues, and healthcare.
