Labour ministers outline reform and security plans at party conference

During the Labour Party Conference, government ministers Louise Haigh and Shabana Mahmood delivered speeches outlining the administration's priorities and recent actions.

Louise Haigh, serving as First Secretary, detailed plans to radically reform the British state and how public money is spent. She emphasized a commitment to bold governance, building on economic foundations established by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. Haigh noted that her objective is to apply a mantra of ‘move fast and fix things’ to the wiring of the government to ensure better management of the £90bn spent by the public sector annually.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood addressed the conference in Liverpool, providing updates on national security and crime. She referenced a recent incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, noting that the individuals responsible were British citizens and that the scene had been secured by explosive ordnance disposal teams. Mahmood also reported decreases in knife crime, serious violence, net migration, and small boat crossings during her first year in office.
