Labour Party conference features debates on ECHR and international debt
During the Labour Party conference, Baroness Shami Chakrabarti addressed arguments regarding the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). She characterized calls to withdraw from the Convention as ‘xenophobic’ and ‘anti-rule of law’, suggesting that such opposition stems from a desire to bypass judicial institutions in favor of direct populist will.
Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy responded to these comments, dismissing them as ‘nonsense’ and highlighting the government's challenges regarding illegal migration and the deportation of foreign criminals.
Separately, Ed Miliband delivered a speech at the conference focused on international debt. He proposed mobilizing global efforts to persuade the World Bank to write off debts owed by poor countries, describing his approach as ‘resilient idealism’.
