Labour wins Wandsworth by-election, denying Conservatives council majority

The Labour Party has won a by-election in the Trinity Ward of Wandsworth, preventing the Conservative Party from gaining outright control of the local council. Labour candidate Shirin Georgiani secured 1,558 votes, defeating Conservative candidate Otto Jacobsson, who received 1,431 votes.

The victory maintains the current council composition where the Conservatives hold 29 seats and Labour holds 28. Because the Conservatives are one seat short of the 30 required for a majority, they remain dependent on an independent councillor through a confidence and supply agreement to pass legislation.

The election follows the resignation of former Deputy Leader Lizzy Dobres and the recent appointment of Robert Morritt as the new leader of Wandsworth Council. This political development occurs as the borough faces significant financial pressure, including potential council tax increases of up to 160% due to projected central government funding cuts.
