Labrador Sea iceberg discovery features unusual black color and diamond shape

A massive, nearly black iceberg with a unique diamond-like shape was discovered in the Labrador Sea. The unusual formation was spotted in mid-May by Hallur Antoniussen, an experienced fisherman with over 50 years of sea experience, while he was aboard the fishing vessel Saputi.

The iceberg stood out sharply against the surrounding white and blue ice. While its exact dimensions were difficult to determine from the sea, Antoniussen estimated it was at least three times the size of a standard bungalow.

Glaciologist Lev Tarasov from Memorial University suggested several possible explanations for the dark color, including the presence of large amounts of rock, soil, or other sediments trapped in the ice as the glacier moved toward the sea. Other hypotheses include volcanic ash or even materials related to an ancient meteorite impact, though these remain unconfirmed.
