Laconia olive oil producers face low demand and price pressure
Olive oil producers in Laconia, Greece, are facing significant difficulties in securing commercial agreements as the new olive oil season approaches. Recent transactions for extra virgin olive oil have been limited to small quantities, with prices settling around 4 euros per kilogram.
Theodoros Boundounis, president of the Agricultural Cooperative of Molaoi-Pakia, noted that recent sales involving one vat of extra virgin olive oil were purchased by merchants for export to Italy. He highlighted a lack of interest from Greek processors in purchasing high-quality oil at this time.
Market pressure is compounded by international competition and high production costs in Greece. For comparison, average export prices in Tunisia, a major competitor, were recorded at approximately 4.05 euros per kilogram in June 2026. While prices in Laconia had reached 5 euros per kilogram earlier in 2026, the current market remains subdued. Data from the European Commission suggests that producer prices in Greece generally moved below 4 euros per kilogram in early September, reflecting a broader market trend.
