Lacul Morii Island to reopen as modern urban park
The Lacul Morii Island in Bucharest is scheduled to reopen to the public on September 18, 2026, following a major urban redevelopment project. The initiative transformed 3.4 hectares of unused land into a modern urban park, featuring 2.3 hectares of dedicated green space.
Funded by European, national, and local Sector 6 resources, the investment totaled nearly 59 million lei. The project includes the planting of approximately 400 new trees, pedestrian walkways, jogging tracks, and modern urban furniture. To support recreational activities, the site now features modernized pontoons for water sports, water-level access ramps, a renovated pier, and floating vegetation islands.
Infrastructure improvements also include a fully consolidated access bridge, locker room pavilions, lifeguard stations, and renovated gazebos. This redevelopment represents the first phase of a broader urban regeneration strategy for Sector 6; a second phase is planned to cover 13 hectares of shorelines and embankments along a 4-kilometer stretch.
