LADA Niva to receive major update with first airbag in decades

AvtoVAZ is preparing a major update for the LADA Niva, scheduled for 2026-2027, marking its most significant overhaul in nearly 50 years. The most notable addition is the introduction of a driver-side airbag, which has necessitated structural reinforcements to the vehicle's body.

Mechanical improvements include a new 1.8-liter, 8-valve engine sourced from the Niva Travel. This engine produces 90 CV and 153 Nm of torque, with 80% of the torque available from 1,000 rpm. The update also features ventilated front brakes, new suspension components, and improved corrosion resistance through the use of double-sided galvanized steel on the hood, roof, and rear doors.

Despite these upgrades, the vehicle lacks modern Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as autonomous emergency braking or lane departure warnings. Due to these omissions and current emission standards, the updated model will not meet European Union safety and environmental regulations, remaining unavailable in the EU market.
